In the spring of 1966, a Duke supervisor asked Hattie Williams and Shirley Ramsey to perform pie-cutting duties in the dining hall, which was outside the range of their assigned duties. When they refused, the supervisor reprimanded them for refusing to work at tasks outside of their job description. They filed a grievance claim, alleging discrimination based on race. The grievance committee, a panel of three people closely tied to the university, denied the claim citing that the task was in fact within their job descriptions. Oliver Harvey, a LOKAL 777 leader, wrote in a letter to President Douglas Knight that if Duke were truly concerned about the rights of its workers, it should establish impartial arbitration as a means to settle disputes objectively, allowing a disinterested party to discern final judgments.
